Statoil to drill the world’s first automated exploration well on a floating rig

This summer Sekal and MHWhirt’s advanced automated drilling control (ADC) solution is put to the test by Statoil on Songa Enabler.

This summer Sekal and MHWhirt’s advanced automated drilling control (ADC) solution is put to the test by Statoil drilling an exploration well in the Barents Sea on Songa Enabler. Statoil expects a potential of 15-20% drilling speed improvements by 2020 using this type of technology. The ADC to be used on the Barents Sea exploration well will monitor drilling fluid, leakage, and early kick and loss detection. The technology is there to make the drillers daily operations easier. The system complements all the other traditional systems used offshore on the Norwegian continental shelf.
